The Mazda RX-8 oil metering pump can be found at the bottom of the engine block, fastened in place by three bolts. Two bolts are located above and below on the side, while the third bolt is toward the front of the car just above the oil lines. This pump injects a small amount of engine oil from the oil pan either into the intake manifold or directly into the combustion chamber. Its role is to lubricate sleeve bearings and dissipate heat from the engine. Despite being a useful component of a rotary engine, the metering oil pump is often wrongly accused of causing high oil consumption. In reality, these pumps are generally reliable and simply cease to function if they fail.
