The neutral safety switch in the 2003 Chevrolet Impala is located at the back of the transmission. It's a semicircular black plastic component fastened to the transmission with two metric bolts. To locate it, you can go under the front of the car and look up towards the transmission. This safety switch ensures that the engine won't start unless the vehicle is in park or neutral to prevent any accidental harm to pedestrians. Disconnecting the switch is a straightforward process: remove the bolts, gently wiggle it out of the transmission, and disconnect the electrical connector.
