In a 2002 Ford Excursion, the speed sensor is situated on the right rear side of the transmission, close to the tail shaft under the vehicle's hood. The vehicle speed sensor (VSS) monitors the speed of the transmission output or wheels. The Electronic Control Module (ECM) utilizes this data to adjust engine operations like ignition timing, air/fuel mix, transmission shift points, and for starting diagnostic procedures. If the speed sensor malfunctions, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) won't be able to effectively manage transmission gear shifts. As a result, the transmission may shift roughly or more rapidly than usual.
