The spare tire on your 2017 Ford Explorer is located underneath the back of the vehicle, near the rear bumper. It is secured in place with a retainer and a retainer cable. Your Explorer is equipped with a specific tool from the manufacturer to lower the cable and remove the retainer. If you don't have this tool, you will have to contact a Ford dealer because a standard socket wrench won't work. Open the first cargo cover towards the back of the vehicle to access the spare tire retainer winch. Use the winch wrench to loosen the winch and lower the spare tire. Check the position of the spare tire after a few turns, and keep turning until the tire touches the ground and the retainer cable goes slack.

These are wrong. The extra tire is located inside the back hatch below the third row of seats. Raise the third row seats and you'll come across a carpeted "hatch". Open the hatch and you'll locate the spare tire. It's not underneath the vehicle.

In the 2017 Ford Explorer, the tire is placed exactly where Neil C specified - beneath the third row of seats instead of under the car.

The spare tire of the 2017 Ford Explorer can be found underneath the rear bumper, right next to it.
