In a 2012 Nissan Sentra, the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) is located near the tail shaft, towards the right rear of the transmission. You can find it positioned between the transmission housing and the radiator. Accessing it is relatively simple – just use a flat screwdriver to pry the plug from the sensor after disconnecting the electrical connector first. This sensor is responsible for measuring wheel speed and relaying this data to the engine control module (ECM). The ECM then utilizes this information to adjust transmission shift points, ignition timing, diagnostic routines, and air/fuel ratio. Signs of a failing VSS include issues with cruise control engagement, erratic speedometer readings, illuminated check engine light, overheating, slipping transmission, and reduced fuel efficiency. Replacing the VSS in a 2012 Sentra typically costs between $280 and $300, with labor accounting for around $70 to $90 of the total.
The speed sensor for the 2012 Nissan Sentra can be found on the right side at the back of the transmission, close to the tail shaft.
