The starter for the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee is located near the bottom of the engine on the driver's side, close to the engine mount. Its main purpose is to crank the engine when you turn the key to start the vehicle. If the starter is not functioning, you won't be able to start your car. Typically, the starter on the Grand Cherokee lasts between 75,000 to 125,000 miles. To access the starter, you have to first disconnect the negative battery cable, then remove the engine side driver mount and engine mount bracket. Next, detach the positive battery cable wire harness connector eyelet from the solenoid battery terminal stud, disconnect the solenoid wire from the starter motor, remove the two mounting bolts, and finally take out the starter.

To work on the 2011 Grand Cherokee with a 3.6 engine and 4-wheel drive, you'll have to take out the exhaust manifold on the left side (driver's side) in order to access the starter. The setup is such that this step is necessary, unless you want to deal with removing the CV joints and differential, which can be a real pain.
