The MINI R56 coolant temperature sensor is positioned at the top of the thermostat housing on the engine's left side. It features a probe that extends into the engine block inlet to monitor the motor's temperature with minimal interference from the coolant system. Known as CTS, the coolant temperature sensor in your vehicle is a crucial component that allows the control unit to issue warnings in case of engine overheating or abnormal temperature spikes. A malfunctioning coolant temperature sensor can relay inaccurate information to the computer, leading to disruptions in fuel and timing calculations. It is not unusual for the sensor to malfunction and continuously signal a cold temperature to the computer, resulting in decreased fuel efficiency and potentially impacting engine performance.
