On the 2012 Chevrolet Impala with a 3.6L engine, the thermostat housing can be located close to the engine block, at the end of the radiator hose. Positioned near the water pump housing at the rear of the engine, replacing it yourself is a relatively easy task. If you're just changing the thermostat, expect to spend around $20 on parts and maybe an hour or two on labor, including setup and teardown. Replacing the entire housing assembly will cost you a little over $100. While this job might take a few hours, it's still manageable even for someone with a casual interest in cars.

I think the thermostat is probably located above the water pump on the front right side of the engine, near where the top hose connects.
