To find the fuel pump relay on a 2003 Mazda Protege, start by locating the engine compartment fuse box. Begin by opening the hood and pulling the hood release lever at the bottom left corner of the driver side kick panel. Then, move to the front of the car and activate the hood release latch by placing your hand between the top of the grill and the bottom of the hood. Lift the hood and secure it in place using the prop rod. Finally, remove the lid of the fuse box by pulling out the tabs to access the fuses and relays underneath.

The gas pump can be found inside the fuel tank. To get to it, you’ll need to remove the rear seats. Lift up the front of the rear seats to remove them. Next, you'll find four Phillips screws behind the panel you remove, which hold the fuel lines and plugs in place. Disconnect those connections, but be prepared for some gasoline spillage. Then, remove eight additional small Phillips screws to finally extract the pump.
