The 2012 Chevrolet Malibu should use DOT 3 brake fluid, with the original part number recommendation being 12377967, now changed to 19353126. There are a couple reasons for a decrease in brake fluid level - normal brake lining wear and leaks in the hydraulic system. If the brake fluid level drops below a certain point, the brake warning light will alert you. Before adding more fluid or opening the reservoir cap, make sure to clean the area to prevent contamination. It is advised to flush and replace the brake fluid every 60,000 miles.
