When you change the battery in your Ford Escape, the systems reset because they are built with components that rely on Volatile Memory. There are two main types of memory: Non-Volatile Memory (NVM) and Volatile Memory (VM). NVM retains data even when power is cut off, similar to an SSD in your computer. On the other hand, VM cannot hold onto data. Your Escape's systems use VM because it is faster and more durable. If NVM were used instead, the major computer parts of your vehicle would need replacement every 5 to 6 years. To avoid data loss when changing the battery, consider using a jump box that plugs into the 12v cigarette lighter port to keep the system powered and prevent the electronics from losing their memory.

It is advised to visit a dealership to handle resets following a battery replacement, as a specialized software is needed to access the car's diagnostics.
