How do I decode a Toyota VIN?

Find the 17-character VIN on the dashboard, door jamb or title. Enter your VIN in the search box above, then read the results position by position. The first three characters identify the manufacturer; the 10th gives the model year.

Step 1: Where to find the VIN on a Toyota

The VIN can be found in three places:

  • Dashboard: Look for the metal VIN plate on the dashboard near the windshield, in the lower corner on the driver's side. You can read it through the windshield from outside.
  • Driver's door jamb: Look inside the driver's side door, near the latch. The door jamb sticker is the FMVSS certification label (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards) on the B-pillar, next to the build date.
  • Documents: Check the title, registration and insurance card.

Some Toyotas also have a VIN stamped on the vehicle body or chassis. The location varies by model and year. The engine serial number is separate from the VIN.

Step 2: Enter your VIN

Type the full VIN, all 17 characters, into the search box above to decode your Toyota VIN. Entering it takes seconds, and the VIN lookup tool requires no account.

Step 3: Read the decoded information

The decoded vehicle description includes production details. Where encoded, the VIN decoder shows the model year, engine type, transmission, trim level, body style, drivetrain and assembly plant, alongside any open recalls. Use the VIN structure breakdown below to understand the characters.

How to Find a VIN?

How to read a Toyota VIN number

Every Toyota VIN is a standardized 17-character alphanumeric code divided into three sections: the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI), digits 1–3; Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS), digits 4–9; and Vehicle Identifier Section (VIS), digits 10–17.

  • Digits 1–3 (WMI): The vehicle manufacturer, vehicle type and country of manufacture. Common Toyota WMI codes include JTD (Japan), 4T1 and 5TD (United States), and 2T1 (Canada). Other codes, including JTM, identify additional Toyota vehicle types.
  • Digit 4: Older Toyota VINs (roughly to model year 2019-2022, depending on the model): body type and drive. For example, B = Sedan, 4x2.
  • Digits 5–8: Position 5 is the engine or powertrain. Positions 6-7 carry restraint (airbag), series and grade codes that differ by model. For example, F in position 5 = 1MZ-FE 3.0L V6.
  • Digit 9 (Check Digit): The 9th character is the VIN check digit, a number or X calculated from a weighted sum of the other 16 characters modulo 11 under 49 CFR 565.15. It helps verify the VIN and detect typos.
  • Digit 10 (Model Year): The 10th character indicates the model year, such as R for 2024 or S for 2025.
  • Digit 11 (Assembly Plant): The 11th character is the plant code of the manufacturing plant, the build location. For Toyota, U = Georgetown, Kentucky, United States; S = Princeton, Indiana, United States.
  • Digits 12–17 (Serial Number): The final six characters form the production sequence number, assigned sequentially at the plant.
Toyota vin number breakdown

The letters I, O and Q are not used in a VIN to avoid confusion with numbers such as 1 and 0. Every VIN identifies one specific vehicle. The VIN format is defined by 49 CFR Part 565 and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard ISO 3779.

To decode a VIN manually, read it position by position as a string of 17 letters and numbers. The engine number stamped on the engine block is a separate number, not the VIN.

Since 1981, every vehicle sold in the U.S. has had a 17-character VIN. Older Toyotas have shorter serial numbers, which can be researched with the classic car VIN lookup.

Can I get a Toyota build sheet by VIN?

Only in part. The VIN identifies the model year, engine and body style, but not the full build list of factory-installed features and options, including standard equipment. Enter the 17-character VIN through toyota.com to view the build year, color, technical specifications and factory- or port-installed equipment. You can print the results from your browser.

  • From the VIN, free: Model year, engine type, body style, assembly plant and open recalls. Parts counters also use the VIN to find the correct parts and part numbers.
  • Original equipment manufacturer (OEM) source: Toyota Vehicle Specification, a free VIN lookup on toyota.com. Any Toyota dealership can pull the same build record by VIN.
  • Window sticker (Monroney label): EpicVIN's window sticker lookup retrieves the original sticker with factory options and the manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP), where the manufacturer still provides it. The sticker lists options and prices; the build sheet identifies what the plant installed.
  • Full EpicVIN report: Previous sale listings with photos and asking prices, plus title history, damage records and odometer readings.

Is a Toyota VIN check free?

What a Toyota VIN decode does not show

A VIN decode provides accurate factory data, not the vehicle's history after sale. Detailed title history, damage records and odometer history are available in the full report. The statistics above draw on auction and listing records, which are proxies rather than state title registries. Owner names remain private under the Driver's Privacy Protection Act (DPPA).
