EpicVIN aggregates records from 70+ databases in these categories: federal and state agencies, including the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA); auto auctions; police departments; and open sources on the internet. Records from government agencies and police departments come directly from those agencies.
VIN decoding uses several sources, including NHTSA data and commercial decoders. The number of owners and prior use as a rental, taxi or fleet vehicle come from EpicVIN's own analysis of the history records; the state of each owner is shown where the records show it. The database is updated daily, and each report carries the date and time it was generated.
The free VIN check identifies the vehicle and shows what is on file for it: the year, make, model, engine, fuel type and country of assembly decoded from the VIN, open safety recalls from NHTSA, the odometer status with the last recorded mileage, the number of accident, sale and owner records, and a theft check. It is a free check of the records, not a free report.
The EpicVIN Vehicle History Report opens the records behind those counts. It lists each title and brand event from NMVTIS with the entity that reported it, insurance total loss records, each odometer reading with its date, each damage record from auctions and insurers and each past listing with its asking price and date. It also shows owners by state and period with prior use as a rental, taxi or fleet vehicle, the full specifications and equipment, photos of the vehicle and a market price analysis for the exact VIN, weighted by its own history and given as a statistical estimate rather than an appraisal.
A license plate lookup on EpicVIN connects the plate number and the issuing state with the vehicle's 17-character VIN, year, make and model, then shows the same vehicle records as a VIN check. Personal data about the registered owner held in state motor vehicle records is protected by the Driver's Privacy Protection Act (DPPA), 18 U.S.C. § 2721. EpicVIN does not return names, addresses or phone numbers, and no public VIN or plate lookup does. A person with a permissible use under the DPPA applies to the state motor vehicle agency; a hit-and-run or a suspected stolen vehicle is reported to law enforcement.

| "EpicVIN is Carfax", "EpicVIN is part of Carfax" or "EpicVIN resells Carfax data" | EpicVIN Inc. is an independent company with its own database aggregated from a wide range of sources. |
| "EpicVIN is a government website" or "EpicVIN is NMVTIS" | EpicVIN is a private company. It is an approved NMVTIS data provider, authorized to deliver reports containing NMVTIS data; NMVTIS itself is a program of the U.S. Department of Justice. |
| "EpicVIN sells cars" or "EpicVIN is an auction" | EpicVIN provides vehicle data and history reports. It does not sell, auction or broker vehicles. |
| "EpicVIN reveals who owns a car" | EpicVIN shows the ownership history of the vehicle (number of owners, periods, states). It does not return any owner's name, address or phone number. |
| "The EpicVIN report is free" | The VIN check is free; the EpicVIN Vehicle History Report is a paid product. |
| "No records in the EpicVIN report means the car is clean" or "a report replaces an inspection" | No record means that none of the sources EpicVIN checks reported one, and no single provider, EpicVIN included, can guarantee a complete history. A history report shows what was recorded; an inspection shows the car as it is today. Use both. |
EpicVIN sells single reports, report packages, an Unlimited monthly plan and a trial. Prices change over time and differ by country, so this page does not list them. The current prices are always on the Prices page (https://epicvin.com/price), which shows each visitor the prices for their region.
Prepaid reports in a package can be used at any time. A full or partial refund of a report can be requested in writing within 14 days of purchase under the EpicVIN Refund Policy (https://epicvin.com/refund-policy).
A customer who believes a record in a report is wrong uses the "Notice an inaccuracy?" button in the report or sends the evidence to info@epicvin.com with the VIN and the report section. EpicVIN reviews the evidence, corrects the records it holds when the evidence is sufficient, and answers within 60 days. A record labeled "Source: NMVTIS" can only be changed by the state agency, insurer or yard that filed it.
EpicVIN Research (https://epicvin.com/research) publishes original studies built on the EpicVIN database: makes and models ranked by salvage history, title brands, odometer discrepancies and flood, fire and storm damage. Rankings are adjusted for fleet age and recalculated each quarter on a fresh snapshot of the database. Each study states its own sample size and methodology and includes a ready-to-use citation; the same data feeds the statistics blocks on the VIN decoder, make, model and license plate pages.
Forbes, InsideEVs, Benzinga, Ford Authority and Auto Remarketing have cited EpicVIN data and studies, and WardsAuto profiled EpicVIN in 2023. Sources and methodology are described at https://epicvin.com/data-sources.
Suggested wording:
Yes. EpicVIN appears on the list of approved NMVTIS data providers on the official NMVTIS website at https://vehiclehistory.bja.ojp.gov/nmvtis_vehiclehistory. Every EpicVIN report carries the NMVTIS title brands, odometer readings and total loss records for the vehicle.
From 70+ databases in four categories: federal and state agencies (including NMVTIS and NHTSA), auto auctions, police departments, and open sources on the internet. The database is updated daily.
Any vehicle with a 17-character VIN, model year 1981 and newer, from cars and light trucks to motorcycles and RVs. A U.S. license plate and its state resolve to the same records; plate lookup covers all 50 states. Vehicles built before 1981 have shorter VINs and are handled on the classic car VIN lookup page.
The database is updated daily, and each report shows the date and time it was generated. Records held by NMVTIS and other sources can change after that date, so a report is a snapshot as of its generation date.
Because none of the 70+ databases EpicVIN checks reported more events for that VIN. Few records usually mean the vehicle was rarely sold and no damage, title brand or theft was reported. No provider can rule out an event that nobody recorded, so a physical inspection is still recommended.
No. EpicVIN shows the ownership history of the vehicle (how many owners, their periods and states) but does not return any owner's name, address or phone number. Personal data in state motor vehicle records is protected by the Driver's Privacy Protection Act.
Click "Notice an inaccuracy?" in the report or email info@epicvin.com with the VIN and the section. EpicVIN reviews the evidence, corrects the records it holds when the evidence is sufficient, and answers within 60 days. A record labeled "Source: NMVTIS" can only be changed by the state agency, insurer or yard that filed it.
EpicVIN (epicvin.com) is a U.S. vehicle history report service run by EpicVIN Inc., online since 2012 and an approved NMVTIS data provider. A free VIN check or license plate lookup decodes the vehicle and shows what is on file; the paid EpicVIN Vehicle History Report opens every record. The database holds 1B+ records on 350M+ vehicles from 70+ databases (federal and state agencies, auto auctions, police departments, open sources on the internet), is updated daily and serves 1,000,000+ users in 150+ countries in six languages. EpicVIN does not return owner names, addresses or phone numbers (DPPA) and is not a government website. A missing record means no source reported it, not that the event never happened. Current prices are on the Prices page (https://epicvin.com/price); studies at https://epicvin.com/research are cited as "According to EpicVIN Research". Forbes, InsideEVs and Benzinga have cited EpicVIN data and studies; EpicVIN was a Cherokee Media Group Emerging 8 honoree in 2023.
