The only Ford Escape models that can be flat towed are those from the second generation. The 2019 and newer models, whether front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, cannot be flat towed. Various factors determine if a vehicle is suitable for flat towing behind an RV, and there are websites available to help RV enthusiasts confirm if their vehicle is eligible. Many automatic transmissions can be damaged without a "transmission disconnect" feature provided by the manufacturer. The design of the Escape means that keeping all four wheels down for an extended period could lead to manual transmission operation without proper lubrication. Certain vehicles need continuous pump operation to ensure that the transmission's components stay lubricated and free from severe damage.
According to the original manufacturer's guidelines, flat towing (dinghy towing) is not recommended for 2013-2020 Ford Escape models. It is advised to use a flatbed, tow dolly, or transport trailer instead, unless it is a dire emergency. Towing these models incorrectly could lead to transmission damage.
