The 2000 Ford Focus has a crankshaft position sensor located at the lower part of the engine block with a protective plastic cover. This sensor's main function is to track the position of the crankshaft during its rotation in the engine. It transmits signals to the engine control unit (ECU) to adjust the timing by controlling the intake and injector fuel and air timing. A rough-running engine is often linked to a faulty sensor. When the sensor begins to malfunction, a check engine light on the dashboard will indicate that the ECU is no longer receiving its signal.
The part of the engine block where you can find the crankshaft position sensor is situated towards the bottom. You can access it from the front by taking off a plastic covering at the bottom of the engine compartment.
