The temperature sensor in a 2009 Chevy Equinox is placed at the rear of the cylinder head near where the coolant pipe exits the top of the engine to return to the radiator. Its role is to measure the coolant temperature before it returns to the radiator for cooling. If you observe that the temperature gauge in your vehicle is malfunctioning, the issue could likely lie with the coolant temperature sensor. Luckily, replacing it is a simple task where you only need to disconnect the sensor from the block and hose, and swap it out. I recommend checking the wiring first before making a purchase for a new sensor.
This can be found under the hood towards the back, close to the radiator cap. Keep an eye out for the thermostat as it is situated nearby.
