The 2012 BMW 528i requires Synthetic 5W-30 motor oil and can hold up to 6.1 US quarts. The owner's manual specifies approved oils as BMW High Performance 5W-30, BMW Longlife-01, and BMW Longlife-01 FE. However, the manual also lists acceptable alternatives as SAE 0W-40, SAE 0W-30, SAE 5W-40, or SAE 5W-30, providing some flexibility. It is recommended by BMW that you have your oil changed by your service center. Your vehicle will send automatic messages to the service center when it's time for an oil change or necessary inspection. To view these messages in detail, access the "Vehicle info," "Vehicle status," and then "Service required" sections. If you wish to check when an automatic service request was sent, navigate to "Vehicle info," "Vehicle status," "Open Options," and select "LaSTService Request.
