Your 2014 Chevrolet Sonic LT can be equipped with one of three different engines depending on how you configure it, and this choice affects the oil capacity but not the type of oil you should use. The 1.4L and 1.8L 4-cylinder engines require 4.2 quarts of oil, while the non-FlexFuel 1.8L 4-cylinder engine needs 4.8 quarts. All of these engines need SAE 5W-30 full synthetic motor oil, though you can use SAE 5W-40 in emergency situations, but it's best to avoid it if possible. Using a thicker oil like SAE 5W-40 can increase friction and lead to premature wear and tear on the engine. Continued use of a higher viscosity oil can shorten the lifespan of your engine, which is definitely not something you want to happen.
