The 2004 Ford Explorer is equipped with a rear axle nut that is 36mm in size. To access it, you will first have to take off your tire, which has a standard bolt pattern of 5 X114.3. This indicates that each wheel is fastened with 5 lug nuts, each with a thread size of 1/2" - 20 UNF. The appropriate socket for removing these nuts will be 13/16 inch. In contrast, the front axle nuts are reportedly 30mm in diameter, but some drivers find that a 29mm socket fits more securely. Therefore, be aware that your experience may differ. Remember, always torque the axle nut to the manufacturer's specifications when replacing it to avoid putting unnecessary strain on your bearings.
