The 2001 Ford Escape is equipped with either a 2.0 L 4-cylinder or a 3.0 L V6 engine that requires Mercon V power steering fluid. Previously, it was sufficient to use Mercon, but now Mercon V is recommended. The vehicle holds approximately 1 quart of fluid. Power steering fluid, a type of hydraulic fluid, facilitates easier turning of the vehicle's wheels. Without the fluid, steering becomes more difficult. It is advisable to change the fluid every 30,000 to 60,000 miles or every 2 years, whichever comes first. The cost of the fluid typically ranges around $15 per quart depending on the brand and the retailer.
