The 2005 Chevy Equinox is equipped with a filter screen instead of a traditional fuel filter. This screen is built into the fuel sending unit, which is part of the fuel pump inside the gas tank. The filter cannot be replaced separately, so if it becomes blocked, the entire pump must be replaced. The Equinox has a specific saddle style gas tank that crosses over the exhaust system and the drive shaft on all-wheel drive models. To access the fuel pump, you will need to unbolt and remove the muffler and drive shaft. In some cases, the exhaust may need to be cut off depending on the vehicle's condition. Once those parts are out of the way, the tank must be supported and the straps removed to lower it and access the pump at the top of the tank.
