In a 2003 Ford Ranger, you can find the starter solenoid on top of the starter motor. First, locate the battery in the engine compartment and then follow the red positive cable connected to the battery to easily locate the solenoid. The main function of the solenoid is to establish a connection between the battery and the starter by creating a magnetic field to engage the internal combustion engine. Signs of a faulty starter solenoid in a Ranger may include the engine not cranking, no clicking noise when attempting to start, the starter spinning without engaging the flywheel, and slow cranking of the engine. A defective solenoid can also present symptoms similar to other issues like a dead battery, loose battery terminals, a seized engine, or problems with the starting circuit. Replacing the solenoid in a 2003 Ranger will cost between $260 and $330, including labor.
