To change the front heater core in a 2005 Ford Freestar, it's a bit of a complex task but many owners decide to do it themselves. The parts cost around $50 to $80, making it much cheaper than going to a professional mechanic. First, park on a flat surface and let the system cool. Unscrew the radiator cap to release pressure, then tighten it back on. Loosen the clamps on the heater hoses on the passenger side of the firewall in the engine compartment. Seal the heater core tubes and place a container in the footwell to catch any spills. Remove the five screws holding the heater core access cover, then take out the cover. Pull out the old heater core by moving it down and back from the dashboard. Install the new heater core by following the reverse steps of removing the old one.
