The 2001 Toyota eco features a timing chain that links the crankshaft to the dual overhead cams. The timing chain is housed inside the engine behind the Serpentine belt, with oil ports facilitating lubrication. Proper alignment ensures synchronization between the crank and camshafts to regulate valve opening and closing. Initially, intake valves open to allow fuel injection into the cylinder, then close to compress the fuel-air mixture. Timing triggers the coil to activate the spark plugs, igniting the fuel in the cylinder. Subsequently, the exhaust valve opens for burnt gases to exit the engine, followed by closure, repeating the cycle in each cylinder.
