In a 2003 Mitsubishi Montero, the timing is controlled by a belt that links the crankshaft to the camshaft via a series of idler pulleys. The purpose of this timing belt is to synchronize the movements of the crankshaft and the camshaft. When the timing is correct, the engine runs smoothly. However, if the belt tension weakens, it may skip a tooth, throwing off the engine timing. This can result in rough idling, difficulty starting the car, and in severe cases, it could lead to engine failure. An incorrect timing can cause one of the valves to open at the wrong moment, leading to the piston hitting it. This can damage the valve and the piston, creating a hot spot that can lead to engine failure.
The 2003 Mitsubishi Montero Limited comes equipped with a timing chain instead of a timing belt.
