The 2005 Toyota Prius makes use of a timing chain, not a timing belt, a feature consistent across all Prius models and years. Unlike timing belts that require replacement every 60,000 to 100,000 miles, the timing chain is designed to last the lifetime of the vehicle. This longevity is attributed to its location inside the engine, benefiting from engine oil, unlike the exposed belt on the exterior. While there should be no need for timing chain replacement, it is advisable to inspect it every 150,000 miles as a precaution. This can be done by taking off the valve cover and checking the tension.
The 2005 Toyota Prius comes with a 1.5L inline-4 engine that has a timing chain. If the engine receives the right maintenance, the timing chain is designed to last as long as the engine itself.
