In 2012, the Hyundai Elantra was exclusively equipped with a 1.8 L 4-cylinder engine across all trim levels, which utilized a timing chain designed to last the lifetime of the vehicle. While timing chains typically endure, they may fail due to a manufacturer's defect or significant damage to the vehicle. Should you face such a scenario and need to replace the timing chain, the cost for a new timing chain kit ranges from $150 to $250. Opting to have a professional auto shop handle the replacement could set you back an average of $900 for parts and labor.

The main response given is regrettably wrong. I own a 2012 Hyundai Elantra and can confirm that it uses a timing belt, not a chain, and it has an interference engine. I find it perplexing that many people are stating it has a chain. Although my car was bought in Canada, so there may have been variations between the models sold in the US and Canada that year, I highly doubt it.
