I reckon all three engine choices for the 2015 VW Passat are equipped with timing chains rather than belts. In my view, there are a couple of advantages to having a chain that outweigh the drawbacks. One major benefit is that it requires no maintenance. You won't have to fret about it wearing out and needing replacement every few years. It stays lubricated by the engine oil without you having to lift a finger. Another significant upside is that it's a sturdy component, and if you're fortunate, you might never need to replace it. Some Passat drivers have surpassed the 200,000-mile mark with their chain still going strong.

Chain
A chain is a series of connected metal rings or links. It is used for various purposes, such as securing objects, holding items together, or for decorative purposes. Chains come in different sizes, strengths, and designs depending on their intended use.
In the 2015 gasoline Passat, the engine is equipped with a timing chain, while the diesel version features a timing belt.
