The type of timing mechanism in your car, whether it's a timing belt or timing chain, depends on the year of your vehicle. However, most vehicles use a timing chain. The exceptions to this are the 2002-2009 Sorento models with a 3.5 L Sigma V6 engine and the 2010-2014 models with the 2.7L Mu V6 LPG engine, which use timing belts. If your vehicle has a timing chain, you're in luck because they require less maintenance compared to belts and are less likely to wear down and break over time. Just remember, if your vehicle has a timing belt, it's recommended to have it replaced every 60,000 miles or so.
The Kia Sorento comes with a timing chain that is designed to endure as long as the engine does.

The Sorrento comes with a timing chain, which I personally prefer. However, just like a timing belt, a chain can also wear down and eventually break. Moreover, it may also create noise while in use.
It really depends on the specific generation or engine you are referring to. For example, my 2005 3.5L engine uses a timing belt instead of a chain. I think that in newer models, they have switched to using chains.
