The 2009-2013 Honda Pilot is highlighted in two Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) pertaining to potential issues with the piston rings, which could malfunction around 72,000 miles and impact the spark plugs. In response to an engineering flaw, Honda is offering a solution through an extended powertrain warranty program. This action was prompted by a class-action lawsuit. The problem arises from the rings rotating and aligning in a way that damages spark plugs, leading to engine misfires. Honda has directed its dealerships to carry out necessary repairs at no cost under a new 8-year, unlimited mileage warranty. The second TSB revolves around pistons that may become stuck open, resulting in increased oil consumption. This affects certain 2008-2011 Honda models, which will be covered by an extended 8-year or 125,000-mile warranty for replacement expenses.

I am experiencing the same problem with my Honda Crosstour. I don't understand why these cars are still on the market. I've had to change my spark plugs and coils three times in less than two years.

American Honda has announced an expansion of the powertrain warranty due to a settlement of a class action lawsuit known as Soto et al. v. American Honda Motor Co., Inc., Case No. 3:12-CV-1377-SI (N.D. Cal.). The warranty now covers engine failures, specifically related to piston ring rotation on certain cylinders causing spark plug fouling and potential DTCs P0301 to P0304 and MIL activation. This enhancement extends the warranty to 8 years with no mileage restrictions from the original purchase date, and a resolution has been reached in the class action lawsuit as a result of this corrective action.
