To open the rear door of a Ford Ranger with a broken latch, you will require a T-30 TorxBit and a ratchet tool. There are 8 bolts at the back of the door that must be taken out in order to move the panel aside. Once the bolts are removed, the door panel can be pushed away to reveal the locking mechanism. Inside there are two rods extending to each side, which can be clamped with vice grips. Pulling these rods towards the center will release the door. To detach the latch assembly, you'll need a 10mm socket to undo the two nuts and remove the handle from the back. You can purchase a replacement handle for less than $30.
Grasp the tailgate latch handle and pull to open it. Apply lubricant to the handle and allow it to penetrate. Use a screwdriver to release the tailgate from the hinges on the truck's side. Lower the tailgate, examine the hinges and rod, and spray them with lubricant to avoid sticking. Shut the tailgate and clean off any extra lubricant.
