If the battery in your BMW X3 is dead and you need to open the tailgate, the only way to do it manually is from inside the cabin. In most cases, the liftgate's release latch will still work with low power, but if the battery is completely dead, you'll need to follow these steps. First, enter the vehicle and go to the cargo area. Once inside, remove the cover in the cargo area to go under the floor. You can then release the stored jack located in the center of the area. Behind the jack mounting spot, there is a handle that you can use to release the latch on the liftgate, allowing you to manually open it.
