To reset the immobilizer system on a 2002 VW Jetta, place your original synced smart key into the ignition and start the engine. After turning off the engine and removing the key, press the lock button on the smart key to activate the system and reset the anti-theft feature. Volkswagen vehicles are equipped with an immobilizer system to prevent unauthorized starting using the wrong key. Each Volkswagen model requires a specific key programmed by the dealership. While other appropriate keys can still start the car, if an incorrect key is used or an unauthorized attempt is made to start the ignition, the immobilizer system will engage, shutting down the engine. Only the correct smart key can be used to unlock the engine.
To reset the immobilizer in a 2002 VW Jetta, first turn the key to the on position and wait for 10 minutes. The light should turn off by this time. If it does, switch off the ignition and then start the car.
