The 2012 Chevrolet Impala is equipped with either of two 3.6L engines, and the type of oil you should use depends on the engine style you have. Both engines require 6.0 quarts of oil and recommend SAE 5W-30 full synthetic motor oil. However, the LFX FlexFuel engine model may perform better with SAE 0W-30 full synthetic oil, especially in cold weather. While you can temporarily substitute SAE 5W-40 full synthetic oil, it's not advised unless necessary. Opting for oil with a higher viscosity can create friction in the engine, leading to premature wear and potential early engine failure. It's best to stick to the manufacturer's recommended oil with the lowest weight, even if it means paying a bit more for each oil change.
