In 2016, Ford Fusion cars did not originally support Apple CarPlay. However, in early 2017, Ford released a software update for vehicles with the SYNC 3 system that enabled Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Owners could download the update from the Ford website onto a USB drive and manually install it by plugging it into the USB port and following on-screen instructions. Ford also offered an option for tech-savvy owners to automatically download and install the update via Wi-Fi. When connected to Wi-Fi, the system would automatically download any available updates without requiring any manual intervention. The software is designed to work with iPhone models from the 5 series onwards running on iOS7.1 or later.
