The 2017 Toyota Corolla has a timing chain that helps synchronize the movement of the crankshaft and camshaft. Engine timing is crucial for proper functioning. When the crankshaft turns, it moves the pistons and connecting rods. Simultaneously, the camshaft rotates, causing the intake and exhaust valves to open and close. When the intake valve opens, the air-fuel mixture enters the cylinder. The spark plug ignites the fuel, pushing the piston down the chamber. Subsequently, the exhaust valve opens to release the exhaust gases. If the timing chain becomes loose or stretched, it can disrupt the timing. Incorrect timing results in engine misfiring and difficulty starting. Excessive misalignment could lead to a piston colliding with a valve, causing significant damage to the engine.
