The Subaru XV is equipped with two timing chains, one for each of its overhead cams. A common problem with these chains is caused by the hydraulic tensioners, which may develop leaks. If the tensioner leaks, the chain can become slightly loose and may make a brief rattling noise when the engine is first started. Over time, the tensioning guides can wear down, potentially leading to engine damage if the chain becomes misaligned. Repairing this issue would involve extensive disassembly of the car's front end. Apart from the tensioner problem, the chain does not require regular maintenance as it is enclosed within the engine and receives continuous lubrication from the engine oil.
The 2018 Subaru XV is equipped with a timing chain as opposed to a timing belt.
