From the mid-1990s onward, Chevrolet started adding transponder chips to their vehicles, but the process was quite slow. It wasn't until the mid-2000s that all their models were equipped with these chips. The first Chevy featuring the chip was marketed in 1997. Surprisingly, the 2003 Chevrolet Impala missed out on having a transponder chip, probably because production was lagging. Instead, it came with a Vats system or a pass key, which had a resistor pellet embedded in the keys.
Chevrolet vehicles in 2003 did not have chip keys.
