The 2014 Volkswagen Jetta has opted for a timing chain instead of a timing belt. Volkswagen likely made this choice because a chain will be more durable and less prone to sudden failure, reducing the risk of serious engine damage. In addition, a belt is more likely to stretch over time, potentially impacting engine performance. Furthermore, rubber components in a belt are vulnerable to degradation from exposure to oil, gasoline, and other automotive fluids, leading to premature wear. Another consideration is that the Jetta features an interference engine, meaning that a broken timing belt/chain while the engine is running can result in significant engine damage.
I have a 2014 Jetta with a 2.0L Gas engine. I was really confused to find out it has a timing belt. A few months ago, I took it to the dealership, and they told me my timing belt needed to be replaced. I spent $1300 on the replacement. Now, I just realized that my Jetta is actually supposed to have a timing chain.
