Every Kia Soul made between 2012 and 2020 comes equipped with a timing chain, not a timing belt. Although the function of timing belts and chains is similar in synchronizing the crankshaft and camshafts, the main difference lies in their materials. A timing chain, made of sturdy metal, is designed to last the lifetime of the vehicle without needing special maintenance. Alternatively, timing belts, made of rubber, will deteriorate over time and require replacement. By keeping your timing chain well lubricated with engine oil, you can expect it to perform reliably for an extended period.
The 2018 Kia Soul comes with a timing chain instead of a timing belt, so you won't need to worry about replacing it. Timing chains are designed to last as long as your car's engine does.
My timing chain recently failed on my 2012 Kia Soul after putting 170,000 miles on it. It seems like this is about the typical lifespan for this type of vehicle.
