If your BMW X1 is making a humming noise, there are a few possible reasons. If the noise is consistent at all speeds, it might be due to cupping in the tires. Cupping occurs when the tires have uneven tread wear, causing certain sections of the tire to be higher than others. This can result in picking up small road debris and creating the humming sound. While not dangerous, this issue will continue to wear down your tires, eventually requiring replacements. On the other hand, if the humming noise gets louder when accelerating, loose wheel bearings in the differential might be the culprit. The bearings moving in their sockets could be causing the humming noise. It would be wise to have this inspected sooner rather than later to prevent further damage. Additionally, you may also notice knocking or front-end sounds due to insufficient lubrication.
If you hear noise coming from the back end or rear differential of your BMW X1, it's probably because the gears have worn down from being overloaded and experiencing lubrication issues.
