The 2008 model year of the GMC Canyon may experience common transmission issues, which can often be resolved by either adding more ATF fluid or completely replacing it. However, in addition to these general problems, there are specific issues that owners should know about, as outlined in GMC's technical service bulletins (TSBs). One such bulletin, PIP4051C, addresses a harsh shifting problem that includes gear grinding noises and the appearance of a P0717 code on the dashboard. This issue is typically caused by wire damage, particularly to the white wire, necessitating the replacement of both the wire and the sensor. Another TSB to be aware of is 08-07-30-027, which discusses a situation where the transmission does not engage when shifted into Drive or 3rd gear but operates normally in first, second, or reverse. If this issue arises, it will be necessary to replace the forward sprag assembly in the Canyon.
