The Mitsubishi Montero's 3.0 and 3.5 liter V6 engines have been known for having reliable transmissions lasting around 125,000-200,000 miles before requiring a valve body replacement. However, this particular model year has its share of problems beyond transmission issues. One common issue is with O2 sensors failing, leading to heater circuit malfunctions. Overheating can also cause oil leaks in the engine's cylinder heads, requiring o-ring replacements. Valve stem problems are another concern, as valve seals in the Montero's V6 models may crack, resulting in oil leaking into the combustion chamber and causing blue smoke and excessive oil consumption. If the transmission is failing, you may notice symptoms such as hard shifting, jerking, hesitation during acceleration, and difficulty shifting gears.
Issues with changing gears and transmission malfunctions have been noted in the 2002 Mitsubishi Montero.
