The FIAT 500, equipped with FIAT's exclusive Dualogic transmission, has been associated with various problems reported by users. These include gear slipping, transmission malfunctions, difficulties, and at times, complete inability to shift gears, among other issues. The Dualogic system is a hybrid gearbox designed for both automatic and manual driving, where the driver controls the gears using a lever in the car. However, in practice, this system has led to numerous problems. Some drivers have noted brand-new 500s having trouble reversing, while others have experienced challenges changing gears smoothly over time. Additionally, gear slipping has been reported by some users, leading to a consensus that the car has transmission issues.
I strongly recommend steering clear of the Duologic at all costs. They are extremely unreliable, outrageously expensive to fix, and quite frankly unsafe. I experienced one breaking down at 70mph on the M25. FIAT knows about the problems but tries to dodge replacing the units under warranty and opts for makeshift repairs. Once it's out of warranty, they push for replacement.
My fix for the issue with the Dualogic semi-automatic gearbox robot in the Fiat 500. Maybe a similar problem to the Fiat Ducato? I shared this on the forum. Here's the problem: The robot unexpectedly shifts from 5th gear to neutral when accelerating for overtaking or when braking to downshift from 5th to 3rd or 2nd gear. This issue seems to arise when the system attempts to shift down from 5th to 3rd or 2nd. I've encountered this problem with two different Fiat 500s, the first being a 2012 model with around 150,000 km, and the second a 2016 model with approximately 50,000 km. Both instances of this issue began during cold winter temperatures, primarily occurring when braking for a downshift from 5th to 3rd or 2nd gear. The problem mostly resolved itself in warmer weather. Initially, I noticed the hydraulic oil level in the reservoir was low, so I topped it off, but that didn't fix the problem. However, the oil level should be at maximum capacity, as the reservoir is linked to the robot. I took some steps to troubleshoot the robot, and since then, I haven't been able to replicate the issue. Previously, the problem would occur frequently when downshifting from 5th gear, but now, after testing the car for four weeks and even in extreme cold conditions of -20 degrees in northern Sweden, there have been no issues. 😊 After researching various discussions globally, I began suspecting an electrical issue, particularly related to the high amperes needed by the solenoids and pump when power consumption peaks. This theory gained traction when I noticed the problem worsening during freezing temperatures and when utilizing seat heaters, rear window heaters, and additional accessories while the battery was also under strain. So, what did I do? I removed and inspected the solenoid closest to the driver's side, manually activating it by directly connecting to the car battery. I ensured the solenoid operated smoothly with no sticking. I also cleaned all electrical connectors on the robot using an electronic cleaning spray. Additionally, I meticulously cleaned and checked all negative connections from the battery to the robot, uncovering slight oxidation on various connection points. Following these steps, I've been driving the car trouble-free for four weeks, even intentionally trying to replicate the issue, but everything is functioning as expected. Hopefully, these insights can assist others facing a similar problem!
An issue that may arise with the transmission shifting in a Fiat 500 1.2 Dualogic is the result of either insufficient transmission fluid or contamination stemming from inadequate maintenance.
