If the alarm on your Toyota RAV4 is going off on and off, you're probably dealing with one of a few potential problems. It's important to note that if you have an aftermarket alarm system, the issues and solutions may differ - this advice specifically applies to the RAV4's original key fob alarm system. The most probable reason for the issue is a drop in voltage from your car's battery. This could be due to a component using power constantly, like a light that doesn't turn off, or an electronic device drawing power. Another possibility is simply having an old battery. In any case, the reduced voltage can interfere with the alarm system, leading to intermittent activation. If the battery isn't the cause, there may be a faulty electronic control unit (ECU) behind the glove box to blame.
Insert the key into the ignition and twist it to activate the battery without starting the engine. Promptly depress and keep holding the override button until you hear the alarm beep once.
