The primary reasons that can prevent your BMW X3 from starting normally include a dead key fob battery, a dead 12-volt battery, battery terminal corrosion, a faulty alternator, a clogged fuel filter, a malfunctioning starter, a blown fuse, an empty gas tank, an immobilizer error, or any electrical system failure. The starter, which is also known as a self-starter, cranking motor, or starter motor, is used to turn an internal combustion engine and kickstart its operation independently. Starters can be electric, pneumatic, or hydraulic. When the starter drive gear is worn out or not engaging properly, it may create a grinding sound similar to the noise produced when you accidentally turn the ignition switch again after starting the engine. Ignoring this grinding noise may lead to damage to the engine's flywheel.
If a BMW X3 has power but fails to start, the issue is probably related to the starter motor.
Make sure you inspect the ground strap that connects the engine to the body. I spent two weeks troubleshooting this issue, and that turned out to be the culprit.
