In a 2017 Chevy Malibu, the most common reason for the check engine light coming on is a loose gas cap. Escaping fumes can trigger the light, and simply tightening the gas cap usually resolves the issue. If that doesn't work, there may be a crack or worn spot in the cap's seal. Another possible cause is a faulty oxygen sensor, which, if left unaddressed, can harm the catalytic converter and spark plugs. Problems with the spark plugs, spark plug wires, or ignition coils can also trigger the light. You can replace these parts yourself with basic tools to avoid paying for service labor. A more serious reason for the light could be a failing catalytic converter, and replacing it in the 2017 Malibu would cost between $1,330 and $1,380.
That sounds great, but my 2017 Malibu, at least the one I have, doesn't have a gas cap.
I own a 2017 Chevy Malibu and I recently changed the catalytic converter and oxygen sensor, but the warning light continues to appear.
If my vehicle lacks a gas cap, what should I do?
In 2017, if the check engine light in your Chevy Malibu comes on, it could be due to low oil levels or a damaged gasket.
