The Jeep Cherokee's "RTE" stands for "range to empty" and is displayed between the driver's center gauges. It is a feature of the fuel alert system that shows how much distance you can drive before the gas tank is empty. Unlike some vehicles, it doesn't indicate how long you can drive after hitting "empty." The RTE can always be viewed on the Cherokee's display and helps in planning travel before refueling. When the RTE drops to 30 miles or less, a low-fuel warning light comes on. It's not recommended to drive on low gas levels as this can strain the fuel pump and lead to failure.
