The 1966 Ford Mustang is said to have a top speed of about 138 miles per hour according to official sources, although the speedometer on the instrument panel goes up to 140 mph. Some modified Mustangs have been documented to reach speeds exceeding 150 mph, but it is not recommended to attempt this without significant suspension changes and high-quality brakes. Once speeds go over 125 mph, braking and steering capabilities begin to diminish as the vehicle's front end lifts. Acceleration-wise, you can go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 6.6 seconds. Ready to rev those engines!

I recently sold a car that I've owned since 1977. It had three different engines over the years - a powerful 289 hi po, a 351 Windsor, and a standard 289. However, the rest of the car's drivetrain always held it back. The fastest setup was the 289 hi po with a 4-barrel carburetor and headers, reaching a top speed of 118 mph at the end of a two-mile straight stretch in the desert.

I had a 1966 Mustang GT with the 289 V8 engine. I pushed the 140 mph speedometer to its limit myself, but it was a one-time occurrence.

Traveling at speeds between 120 and 138 miles per hour, my car, which had a straight-six engine, suffered a blowout while cruising at 70 to 73 miles per hour on the highway. Even after the engine was repaired, it seemed unable to accelerate beyond the 70s.

In 1966, each Mustang had its unique features with variations in body styles and engine options. The model year saw three body configurations and five engine choices, from the economy 6 to the powerful Hi-Po V8, although not all trim levels had access to all options. The iconic Ford GT40 and AC Cobra were not part of the Mustang lineup that year, and their engines were not factory options for Mustangs. Despite this, even the fastest coupe from the factory couldn't reach 120mph in a quarter-mile sprint. It's possible that with longer distances and downhill assistance, the most powerful 1966 Mustang coupe might eventually hit that mark.
