The Chevy S-10 rear differential cover is oval-shaped, measuring 11 inches by 10.25 inches. It is compatible with either an 8.5-inch or 8.6-inch axle, capable of transferring up to 1,000 horsepower to the truck's rear wheels. This 10-bolt can also fit GM's 7.5/7.625 and 8.2-inch axles, but they offer lower power and performance compared to the 8.5" or 8.6" versions. Larger axles have a wider ring and pinion gear surface, allowing for better cooling and improved horsepower while in motion. Proper gear oil is crucial for lubricating the drivetrain and wheel axles of a truck. In the Chevy Silverado, the rear differential uses 75W-90 gear oil and is an 8.6-inch model located beneath the truck in the center of the driveshaft. The cover is secured with twelve 10mm bolts, and the plug can be opened using a 3/8" drive tool.
